Andrzej Bator – born in Łódź, Polish graphic artist, painter, poster designer, and illustrator. A graduate of the Faculty of Graphic Arts and Printing at the State Higher School of Fine Arts in Łódź (now the Academy of Fine Arts), he has received numerous awards, including the “Gloria Artis – Merit for Culture” medal from the Minister of Culture and National Heritage in 2021.
He is the initiator and co-founder of the artistic group “Powidoki”, established in 2017, which focuses on exploring new forms of artistic practice and creative collaboration. Since 1997, he has been a member of the Association of Polish Artists and Designers (ZPAP), Łódź district.
The artist’s work, inspired by the traditions of Impressionism and Op Art, focuses on the relationship between line and the pictorial plane. A distinctive feature of his practice is a stroke module of a fixed length of 1.5 cm, which serves as the fundamental building block of his compositions. Through repetition, it forms abstract structures rooted in personal experience, musical inspiration, and observations of nature.
As the artist states:
“The stroke, the line, is the fundamental element of artistic expression, particularly significant in drawing. It is a trace of artistic sensitivity, defining contour and creating value. I am interested in the line and everything that happens around it. I play with the stroke, with the line. I strive to expand the realm of lines and strokes created on the surface, as well as those that emerge spontaneously – appearing from the background and co-creating forms.
Just as in painting, where juxtaposed colors evoke new tones, in drawing, traced lines create the impression of additional lines, forming intriguing and surprising visual mirages.”
Andrzej Bator has participated in numerous exhibitions in Poland and abroad. His works are held in both private and public collections in Poland and internationally.
